Jean Renel Pierre Louis

"Prensnelo" - Grenada

Jean Renel Pierre Louis (aka Prensnelo) is a painter, photographer/film maker from Petit Goâve, Haïti. His first exhibit was in a collective of ten Haitian artists, including Jean-Claude ‘Tiga’ Garoute, co-founder of the Saint-Soleil post-naïve school of Haitian painting.
In 2014 a visual arts/cultural and research residency in Grenada – to explore the historical connection between Haiti and Grenada, including a week-long workshop with five local artists, culminated in an exhibition titled Amitye (friendship). Prensnelo relocated to Grenada and attained citizenship.
He co-founded Sans Souci Arts Studio (SSAS) in 2015 and co-facilitated a 30-day Empowerment for the Disadvantaged Environmental Art Workshop for 17 male inmates at Her Majesty’s Prisons, Grenada, funded by UNESCO. His grounding philosophy is that creative artforms can save lives, as is the case for many of his artisan colleagues in Haiti who depend on their skills to feed their families.
Prensnelo works between Haiti, the Dominican Republic and England, but usually is resident in Grenada.
His work explores Caribbean (Haiti and Grenada) identity and culture as mixed media/collage paintings on paper, canvas, and wood, shown in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the United States, Switzerland, Romania, China, France, Spain, England, Trinidad and Grenada.
