I am what you call a late bloomer. My life changed significantly 7 years ago when I wrote my first script during a beginner’s screenwriting class. I had never felt such sense of purpose before; I was home. What followed in the next years were two award winning short films that traveled to film festivals all over the Caribbean, Latin America, Canada and The Netherlands. In addition to taking short form courses in screenwriting (shorts) and production management.
I have been wanting to work on this film for a very long time. Inspired by true events, Bispu explores colorism and the alienation it often creates in families - a big problem in black communities. Colorism has never been addressed in a film in the Dutch Caribbean or the Netherlands. I believe this short will resonate with people in the greater Caribbean.
My experience as one of the top 15 finalists in Netflix’s New Voices Scriptwriting Competition (Netherlands) has fueled my desire for storytelling even more. Bispu is an opportunity to take all that I have learned to explore my voice in an uncompromised fashion.
